L&N RS3 #145

: Cumberland KY, spring, 1971

At the crossing deep in the Appalachian Mountains, met a coal drag with L&N RS3 #145, one of the 122 RS3s L&N owned. #145 was built in 1954.

ALCO RS3 was built between 1950 and 1956 with 1600hp prime mover. 1265 units were sold in United States.

L&Nが122両抱えていたALCO製RS3の内の１両、145号機。ライト・グレーに黄色の端部という新塗色である。

Appalachiaはケンタッキー州、テネシー州およびバージニア州の州境が交わる産炭地域をいう。L&NやSOUの他、INTERSTATE RAILROADなどの路線が毛細血管のように山間の炭坑に向け分け入っていた。沿線の、Company Houseの前にWalker Evansの写真集にあるようなひとたちがたたずむ、町の風景が印象に残っている。
