A row of letters sits on the base line. So, the forward-leaned letters precede the base, while the backward- leaned letters are behind the base. If the base moves with the train, the forward-leaned letters precede its train, and the backward- leaned letters are behind its train.

Man perceives the letters with eyes or fingers. The speed of man's perceiving the letters would be almost the same. So, we can say that the letters have almost the same speed. This hypothesis leads to the conclusion that the train with the forward-leaned letters is slower, and that the train with the backward- leaned letters is faster than the letters.


先に挙げたタイポグラフィの資料によれば、欧文書体においては、文字の下端に位置する「並び線」が基準となる。この線の上に文字列は載っている。したがって、前傾書体では基準より文字のボディが先行し、後退書体では基準よりボディが遅延する。基準が列車とともに動くなら、前傾書体では列車より文字列が先行し、後退書体では列車より文字列が遅延すると理解できる。

人間は文字を知覚で追う。人間の知覚は一般的にはほぼ均一だろう。したがって、人にとって文字はほぼ同じ早さをもつものとしてとらえられる。仮に文字列の速度が一定だとすれば、前傾書体では文字列の速度より列車の速度の方が遅く、後退書体では文字列の速度より列車の速度の方が速いことになる。つまり、前傾書体の記された列車は比較的速度が遅いといえる。
