Bringin’ Back the Scene 03 – Southern Railway intermodal freight

Wheels of Time produced Sea-land 35’ containers in summer 2012. 35 feet long would sound strange as we are used to 40 feet containers. But I found them in my photo archive. The picture shows Southern Railway freight bound for Chattanooga departing John Sevier yard at Knoxville TN. Here, Sea-land equipment #54694 and its partners loaded on Trailertrain flatcars can be seen.

According to the Feb 1976 “Official Intermodal Equipment Register (OIER)”, #54694 was a part of 50000 – 58746 series 35’ dry “van”; believed to be container welded to chassis. The connectors on the corner of the equipment appeared in the photo suggests its origin. So, I decided to reproduce this scene using the Wheels of Time product.

Today, boxcar red Trailertrain flats are coming from MTL, BLMA, and TRAINWORX. 35’ Sea-land container/trailer can be realized using Wheels of Time product. The point is the trailers on the first car. They seem an SOU container/van and a smooth side Sea-land container/van. I decided to kitbash dead stock Deluxe Innovations 40’ corrugated containers to create them for the scene.

昨夏、Wheels of Timeというメーカーが、Sea-landの35フィートという、あまり馴染みのない寸法のコンテナを製品化した。Sea-land社は洋上コンテナ輸送のパイオニアであり、ベトナム戦争当時本土から戦地への物資輸送に貢献した海運会社である。この会社（厳密には経営を引き継いだ別会社）のコンテナは昨年アラスカで実物を見ており、このブログでも紹介した。

改めて、1970年代に撮影した写真をよく見たところ、この35フィートコンテナをシャーシに載せた姿が写っているものを見つけた。それが上の写真である。そこで、この情景を模型で再現してみようと思い立った。

手前の貨車に載っているコンテナは件のキットを組めばよい。問題は奥の貨車に載っているものだ。ネガをルーペでよく見ると、どうやら、Sea-landの側にリブのない35フィートコンテナとSOUの40フィートコンテナのようだ。

1976年版Official Intermodal Equipment Register (OIER)によれば、Sea-landは側にリブのない35フィートの冷蔵コンテナを相当数運用している。プロトタイプの画像を探すとよく似たものを見つけたので、これを参照し作ってみた。

同じくOIERによれば、SOUは40フィートのコンテナをシャーシに固定してしまったトレーラーを運用している。このプロトタイプの画像もいくつか見つけた。40フィートなら既製品を加工するだけだ。

このようにして作った車をMTLのTrailerTrain Flatcarに載せ、Intermountain製F7やAtlas製GP38に連ね、上の写真にある列車に仕立ててみたのが下の写真である。影でも分かるように、通常より間延びした間隔がトゥリヴィアルな楽しみを与えてくれる積荷だ。
