Rio Grande Remnants in Utah 06 – Manned Helper Operations, Helper

: manned helper cut-in the loaded coal train

Wide use of DPU removed manned helper from most of the helper districts in United States, but not this district. Rio grande "Last of a breed"s used to mingle at Helper for the manned helper service. Today, UP 70s and 44s succeeded them. These manned helpers cut-in at middle of the westbound loaded coal train at Helper, and cut-off at Colton or Soldier Summit.

Photo above shows three (UP SD70ACe's #8640, 8677 and AC4400CW #6311) units manned helper forcefully but smoothly departing Helper after whistling to each other with the headend. Two DPUs are also pushing at the rear end.

Photos below, a trainman is starting prime movers of four (UP AC4400CW #7182, ES44AC #7602, SD70ACe #8793 and AC4400CW #6399) units helper set one by one, preparing for the next assignment.

ユタ州における元Rio Grande沿線に今も残るRio Grandeの遺物を紹介している。

今回取り上げるのは「もの」ではない。有人の補機運用という「こと」である。DPUの汎用によって、北米における有人の補機運用はほとんどなくなってしまったようだ。しかし、ここSoldier Summit越えには、Rio Grande時代からの有人による補機運用が残っている。Rio Grande時代の末期にはSD40T-2がその任に当たっていたが、今日ではSD70ACeやAC4400CWが用いられている。

上の写真は、三重連の有人補機が、石炭を満載したユニット・トレーンの中間に入り、Helperを出発するところである。最後尾でもDPU2両が押している。軽く汽笛を交わしてから、腕に因るのか機能に因るのか知らないが、スラックによる衝撃などなく実にスムーズに出発していった。およそ40キロ先のSoldier Summitまで列車を押し上げてから戻ってくるはずだ。下の写真は、次の運用に備え、係員が四重連の機関車を１両づつ起動させているところである。
