This boxcar is preserved at the Monticello Railroad Museum in Illinois.

According to the equipment roster of the Museum, this car was built in 1937 by GATC[1]. Trucks may have been replaced in the late ’60s according to the markings on the truck. The restoration at the Museum was finally completed in 2011[2].

IC 41000 – 41599 series Boxcars
The Official Railway Equipment Register (ORER) for January 1972 shows the group #41000 to 41599 with only a single car in place, maybe #41446 equipped with DF-1 belt loading devices according to Note 4-14, listed as follows:

AAR Designation XL and description “Box. Stag. Doors” only.

The inside length of these cars is 50 feet 6 inches, inside width 9 feet, inside height 10 feet 7 inches, outside length 54 feet 4 inches, extreme height 14 feet 11 inches and capacity 4690 cubic feet or 100,000 pounds.

None of this series of boxcar is listed in 1974 ORER.

この貨車はイリノイ州にあるMonticello Railroad Museumという博物館・保存鉄道で見つけた。1937年GATC製で、2011年に修復を終えた車両である。車体に似合わない現代的な台車は、刻印に則せば1969年以降に振り替えられたもの。

博物館のレポートによれば、レタリングは、1）車体に粘着フィルムを貼る、2）その上に型紙を貼り、文字輪郭を転写する、3）フィルムを切り抜く、4）上から白ペンキを数回塗布する、5）フィルムをはがす、という工程を経たという。ステンシルの素材を紙からフィルムに替え車体に密着させたところがポイントか。切り抜く際に塗膜を傷つけたところから錆びないか気がかりだが、白ペンキを刷毛で塗り重ねた割にはエッジがシャープに仕上がっているように思えた。

ご多分に漏れず、ORER記載の各部寸法と車体に表記の寸法が違う。
