Making Ethel’s Cafe, part 5

: result of the washes

I’m trying to duplicate the whole town of Cisco, Utah in N scale. Here, I represent the making of Ethel’s Cafe.


As you can see below, the color of earth differs depending on your point of view. The color of earth around Cisco seen from high above the sky was, so to say, off-white. It was difficult to say the color of earth around Cisco seen from the standing position because various weeds and bushes covered the earth. The color of earth around Cisco seen from the crouching position was, so to say, mixed umber.

I’m making this diorama in Japan. It’s far away from the site, rather difficult to check if the color is matching. Photos I took at the site help me a lot, but their color depends on the LCD monitor I use.

The color of construction materials often depend on the location as heavy materials like rocks and sands tend to be carried from not so far away. Accordingly, I finally referred to the material I picked up at Cisco to determine the color of my georama.

I applied color to my white diorama made of paper clay using a weathering technique called “washes”. I used several thinned Liquitex acrylic paints in turn from bright color to dark color. Brown colors are used to duplicate the surface, and black is used to add shadows. The result is shown below.

ユタ州を走るD&RGWの沿線にある／あった、Ciscoという町を紹介している。Ciscoの町の西端にあった、そしてCiscoにおいて最後まで営業していた、Ethel’s Cafeという店のジオラマを作っている。


ジオラマは、発泡スチロールの土台に紙粘土で地面を造形し、リクテックスで着色して完成とする予定。市販の砂や粉・ファイバーの多くはアウトスケールだし、値もはるので使う予定はない。

さて、何を基準に地面の色を決めるか、いろんな考え方があるだろう。まずは視点の設定。やっぱり低く近くから覗いてリアルな光景を楽しみたい。プロトタイプの大地は飛行機から見るとやや白っぽい褐色をしている。立って見る大地は、砂漠とはいえ草が結構茂っていて、季節によって印象も異なり何ともいえない。しゃがんで見る大地は、褐色系の礫と白っぽい泥が混ざり固まった感じ。そこで草が枯れた晩夏、むき出しの乾燥した大地をイメージして制作することにした。

写真の色は実際とは異なる。さりとて簡単に色合わせに出向く訳にもいかない。そこで現地で拾ってきた1926年製コンクリートブロックのかけらを色見本にした。重たいブロックやその骨材は近隣で調達しただろうから、この辺りの大地と似た色をしているに違いないと考えた。ちなみに近くのGrand Junctionには今も貨車の発着があるブロックメーカーがある。

色見本であるブロックのかけらを横に置いて、定石通り、薄い色から順に着色していく。リキテックスを水で薄めた液を、幅広の刷毛で手早く塗るというより染めていく感じ。最後に、陰影を表現すべく薄墨を塗った。さて、見本通りの色合いになっているだろうか。
