ARR train No. 5 in 1968

The train goes up the Nenana River to the summit of the line. Twisting rail provided the photo looking back and forth of the train.

According to the investigation through the loupe lens, today’s No. 5 has 8 passenger cars including 2 baggage cars and a diner, 5 boxcars including ARR, GN and UP, a flat car with a 20’ reefer container, 7 gons with SEALAND container, 3 empty bulkhead flats and a caboose.

In the diner, passengers enjoyed the wonderful scenery along with nice foods. Sorry that the food is finished, but the photo would be welcomed by those who enthused in railroad tableware.

アンカレッジに向け、列車はNenana Riverを遡る。カーブでは列車の前後をとらえられる。写真から見ると、この日の列車は荷物車・食堂車を含め客車８両、boxcar５両、コンテナ車８両、bulkhead flat car３両にcabooseという編成のようだ。

食べ散らかした後の写真で申し訳ないが、railroad tablewareに興味のある方もあるかと思い、食堂車内の風景も紹介する。ちゃんとした陶器で提供されているのがいいではないか。おそらく朝食メニューだったはずだ。

Nenana Riverが作り出した渓谷を登り詰めるとMcKinley(現Denali) Parkに到着する。フェアバンクスから122マイル（約200キロ）、1966年版時刻表によれば約３時間半の旅だ。意外と俊足である。途中で貨車を解結していたら、こんな時間では来られない。筆者が常々乗ってみたいと思っているVIA Rail Canadaの混合列車The Pas-Pukatawagan trainなど156.3マイル（約250キロ）に９時間近くを要する。貨車は始発のフェアバンクスで連結したのだろう。
